What is BMI?

Body mass index is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in meters squared. The World Health Organization uses these adult categories:

  • Below 18.5: underweight
  • 18.5 to 24.9: healthy weight
  • 25 to 29.9: overweight
  • 30 and above: obesity

Limits of BMI

BMI does not tell muscle from fat, so muscular people can score as overweight. It also does not show where fat is stored. Waist size and body composition give extra context. BMI categories for children and teens use age-specific charts and are not covered here.
